Abstract: The unusual isolated and confined environment (ICE) in Antarctica is harsh and challenging for all of the people who try to visit and explore it. Meanwhile, the extreme environment provides a natural laboratory for the study of psychology, human behavior and social sciences. Winter-over syndrome and the third-quarter effect occurred commonly for most of people with various degrees. Positive experiences by winter-over staffs were highlighted in recent studies. This paper summarizes main psychological research findings and development on polar psychology in past three decades, including winter-over syndrome, adaptation process, personality research, behaviors and performances in station cultures.
