词汇获得年龄效应的认知机制: 三水平元分析

Cognitive mechanisms underlying the age of acquisition effects: Insights from a three-level meta-analysis

摘要:

词汇获得年龄(Age of acquisition, AoA)指个体最早理解某个单词意义时的年龄, 研究发现早获得词汇比晚获得词汇的加工速度更快, 准确率更高, 表现出词汇的AoA效应。针对AoA效应的认知机制, 研究者提出了多层次理论、表征理论和任意映射理论。为了系统地考察AoA效应发生的认知机制, 本研究使用三水平元分析对考察AoA效应的已有文献进行定量分析, 研究中检索和筛选了2024年5月15日以前发表的文献, 最终纳入130篇研究(271个效应量, N = 10697)。元分析结果发现AoA效应的效应量大小为Hedge’ s g = 0.47 (p < 0.001, 95% CI = [0.41, 0.52]), 其效应大小受任务类型和词频的调节, 并且主要依赖于不同任务的语义相关度, 但不受目标认知过程、文字系统和任务语音相关度的影响。研究结果表明AoA主要影响了语义加工阶段, 支持了表征理论, 早期习得的词汇具有更丰富的语义网络, 从而促进了词汇加工过程。

Abstract:

Age of acquisition (AoA) refers to the age at which an individual first understands the meaning of a word. Researches revealed that the processing speed of early acquired words is faster and the accuracy is higher, called the AoA effect. To determine the cognitive mechanism underlying the AoA effect, researchers have proposed The Multiple Loci Account, Representation Theory, and Arbitrary Mapping Hypothesis. In order to systematically investigate the cognitive mechanism of the AoA effect, the present study employed a three-level meta-analysis to quantitatively analyze existing literature on the AoA effect. Through the retrieval of articles published before May 15, 2024, the current meta-analysis identified 130 studies, with 10697 participants and 271 effect sizes. Analysis revealed that the effect size of the AoA effect was Hedge’s g = 0.47 (p < 0.001, 95% CI = [0.41, 0.52]). Additionally, the effect size was moderated by task type and word frequency, mainly depending on the semantic relevance across different tasks. However, no significant moderating effects were observed for the target cognitive process, writing system, or the phonological relevance across different tasks. The results of the current meta-analysis indicated that AoA mainly affects the semantic processing stage, and primarily supports the Representation Theory, with early-acquired words having a richer semantic network, thereby facilitating the word processing process.
