当今时代, 人类正处于科学技术试图催生新文明的前夜。互联网、计算机和智能手机等科技将人类的认知能力延伸到机器之中, 甚至改变了人类的情感和意识体验, 使得人们逐渐接受“心理生活并不局限于脑”这样一种信念。这引发了人们对“延展心智”问题的关注。延展心智曾经主张, 记忆、思维、情绪和情感等心理过程并非局限于有机体的脑或中枢神经系统。相反, 在某些条件下, 有机体非神经部分的身体、身体之外的环境和世界都是实现心智的有效成分, 发挥了构成性的功用。早期的延展心智研究集中于认知过程的探讨, 经历了三波浪潮; 后来又扩展到延展情感, 探讨了情绪和情感的延展属性。近期, 意识体验是否可延展引发了人们的关注。如果认知、情感和意识体验都可超越个体的生物疆界, 包含实现心智过程的外部资源, 那么, 心理生活可能就不再囿于头颅和皮肤, 脑也并非实现心理生活的唯一器官。实际上, 延展心智依然是建立在具身认知的理论之上, 关键是如何看待“身体”的主动作用。这对于我们重新认识心理生活的本质具有重要启发意义。
