Abstract: Time is a necessary condition for innovation. However, in today’s fast-paced society with accelerated development, the individual creative process is inevitably accompanied by time constraints. The existing literature on the relationship between time constraints and creativity has yielded inconsistent findings. The present project posits that such a contradiction stems from the failure of previous studies to distinguish between individuals’ acute perceptions of task time demands and their chronic perceptions of time resource limitations. Grounded in the Biopsychosocial Model of Challenge and Threat (BPS-CT), the current project argues that task-related acute time pressure, as a perception of external task demands, interacts with chronic time poverty, as a perception of individual time resource limitations, to shape individuals’ challenge-threat appraisals within creative performance contexts. These appraisals, in turn, influence individuals’ regulatory focus during task execution and ultimately affect creative performance. We will investigate the interaction effect between task-related acute time pressure and chronic time poverty on individual creativity, and explore the mechanisms behind this interaction. Additionally, we will design a systematic intervention program to address chronic time poverty. This project aims to understand the impact of time constraints on creativity from the dual perspectives of task demands and individual resources. The anticipated findings will provide recommendations for management practices in innovative organizations and promote the innovative development of organizations and society.
