Dignity: Self-Respect, Respected, Respect

Abstract: Dignity is a property of human-being. Dignity in the paper is conceptualized as a concept that has three components: self-respect, respected by others and respecting others. Self-respect is global self evaluation and related affects. Being respected and respecting others are interpersonal consequence and attitude. Individual’s freedom, autonomous, self control, and social justice are related to dignity not only in theories but also demostrated in empirical studies, as those following Skinner’s ideas. Dignity is also shown to be located near to the vertical axis of interpersonal circumplex, so that individual’s ability and status will affect one’s self-respect and being respected by others.
