The unconscious information processing process of insightful problem-solving and the regulatory role of executive function.(32471108)

Abstract: Insight represents a hallmark of creative thinking. While prior theoretical and empirical work has emphasized the critical role of unconscious processing, the specific dynamics of how unconscious processes operate during insight problem-solving remain largely unexplored. Key questions persist: How do weakly associated pieces of information transition from unconscious to conscious processing? What role does executive function play in this process? To address these issues, this project proposes a cognitive model that highlights the dynamic nature of unconscious processing and the regulatory function of executive control. Using a multi-method approach—including behavioral measures, eye-tracking, EEG, and fMRI—we will examine the conscious and unconscious dynamics during insight. Furthermore, behavioral interventions and tDCS will be applied to investigate how the deactivation of executive function may facilitate the processing of weak associations. This research aims to uncover the subconscious mechanisms of creative problem-solving and provide a scientific basis for developing interventions that enhance creativity.
