EFFECTS OF LISTENER'S RESPONSE TYPES ON SPEAKER'S RECODE IN REFERENTIAL COMMUNICATION

Abstract: The present study investigated children's communication skill recurs to listener's (story listener) different types of response in referential communication. Response types were mainly divided into three: nonverbal response, verbal response and mixed response. 60 French children (M=8years, 7months) participated in a communication game. The speaker told a story meanwhile the listener made up the story figure with vignettes. Our results indicated that it existed a preference of speaker's recode in response to listener's different types of response in order to improve the communication efficiency. Listener's verbal response was the most effective one in eliciting speaker's recode, mixed response type was in the next place but it was more effective than nonverbal response.
