Abstract: Residential mobility is an increasingly common life experience in modern society and has been widely recognized for its impact on individual psychology and behavior. However, existing research has primarily focused on the effects of residential mobility on individuals’ own consumption decisions, with limited attention to its influence in family contexts, particularly on parents’ consumption decisions for their children. This study focuses on the intergenerational effects of parental residential mobility and examines how it influences parents’ consumption decisions and preferences for their children, as well as the underlying psychological mechanisms. Considering that parents’ consumption decisions for their children encompass multiple domains, and that parenting goals and decision priorities vary significantly across different stages of a child’s life course, this study adopts a life-course perspective and investigates three key stages—early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Specifically, it examines the effects of parental residential mobility on food, education, and entertainment-related decisions, and further explores the underlying psychological mechanisms and boundary conditions. By integrating residential mobility into the study of family and intergenerational decision-making, this research not only broadens the theoretical scope of residential mobility studies but also provides insights into the dynamic characteristics of family consumption decisions, with implications for both practice and policy.
