Abstract: Trust repair is essential for maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have primarily focused on short-term trust repair from the perspective of the transgressor. Drawing on the Bilateral Model of Trust Repair (BMTR) and the Four-Stage Life Cycle of Trust Repair (FSTR), the present study adopted a bilateral interaction perspective and integrated the traditional Chinese cultural concepts of cheng (sincerity) and shu (forgiveness). Utilizing the Trust Game paradigm and scenario simulation methods, three progressive experiments were conducted to systematically investigate how the violator’s Cheng and the trustor’s Shu facilitate the complete transition from short-term restoration to long-term reconciliation, as well as the moderating role of relationship types. Study 1 examined, from the trustor’s perspective, the effect of perceived sincerity on forgiveness and short-term trust repair. Study 2 examined the effect of the victim's forgiveness on the transgressor's subsequent willingness to repair trust, from the perspective of the transgressor. Study 3 returned to the trustor’s perspective to examine the influence of perceived sincerity on long-term trust repair. The results showed that perceived sincerity significantly promoted the trustor’s forgiveness and facilitated short-term trust repair; the trustor’s forgiveness further elicited the transgressor’s subsequent repair intentions; and the transgressor’s timely and substantive expressions of sincerity in the later stage ultimately promoted long-term trust repair. Throughout the process, relationship types generally demonstrated a differential pattern effect in trust repair. However, under specific conditions, both the “acquaintance effect” and the “stranger effect” were observed. Based on these findings, the study proposed a culturally grounded “Cheng–Shu–Xin” three-stage bilateral framework of trust repair, which integrates and extends both the BMTR and FSTR models, addresses the limitations of indigenous trust repair theories, and provides practical implications for trust restoration in real-life interpersonal contexts.
