Abstract: According to psychology researchers, narcissism is a concept that is both familiar and puzzling. Narcissism is considered a personality characteristic with individual differences and is also defined as a person’s ability to maintain a positive self-image.The fields of clinical psychology and personality/social psychology have made new advances in understanding the meaning and structure of narcissism. Two themes of grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism have been proposed, and several the trifurcated models with entitlement/antagonism as the central feature, grandiosity/extroversion and vulnerability/neuroticism as the phenotypic features had been developed. But what is the relationship between normal and pathological narcissism? What is at the core of narcissism? The trifurcated models do not solve this problems. This paper clarifies the two meanings of the psychoanalytic source of narcissism, combs clinical psychology and personality/social psychology development, puts forward two research approaches of narcissistic personality characteristics and self-regulation, and proposes an integrative model including the dynamic system, personality characteristics system and regulatory system of narcissism. This paper aims to provide a new perspective for the integrated study of narcissism.
