Abstract: The high comorbidity of depression and pain poses challenges for diagnosis and treatment of depression. By summarizing the studies about behavioral characteristics, brain activation patterns, and functional connectivity between brain regions of physiological and psychological pain in depression, it reveals different clinical characteristics of physiological and psychological pain in depression and elucidates the neural mechanisms underlying different types of pain in depression. Future research should further investigate the distinctiveness of the two types of pain-depression comorbidity, delineate the factors that influence pain processing in depression, explore the commonalities and differences of physical pain processing and psychological pain processing in depression, and elucidate the functional neurological alterations associated with pain in depression for more precise diagnosis and more effective treatment.
