Abstract: In the early stages of life, children's multisensory integration abilities guide the development of perception. The global multisensory integration and local unisensory detail processing abilities mutually promote and develop together. Individuals with autism exhibit impairments in multisensory temporal integration (e.g., audiovisual, auditory-motor, visuotactile, visual-motor, and verbal-nonverbal signals). At the cognitive level, they experience difficulties in social orientation, behavioral prediction and monitoring, and attentional resource allocation when processing sensory input, output, and integration. At the neurophysiological level, disruptions and abnormalities are observed in the autonomic nervous system, neurotransmitter secretion, mirror neuron activity, and functional brain region activation during multisensory temporal integration. Given the characteristics of multisensory temporal integration in individuals with autism, targeted sensory integration training and intervention programs emphasizing interpersonal synchrony during early childhood can help improve their perceptual states and enhance interpersonal synchrony, thereby promoting social interaction skills. Future research should further explore ways to improve the ecological validity of temporal integration studies across sensory modalities in autism and develop more adaptive intervention programs tailored to their multisensory temporal integration characteristics.
