Abstract: Emotional flexibility refers to an individual’s core capacity to dynamically adjust their emotional responses according to situational changes. Previous studies have mostly focused on the beneficial effects of emotion regulation strategies and their active processing mechanisms, yet they have overlooked the impacts of various influencing factors and their interactive effects on emotional flexibility both prior to and during the initiation of processing. This study constructs an integrated model of the influencing mechanisms underlying emotional flexibility, from the perspective of the combined effects of antecedent factors (individual and environmental factors) and in - processing factors (cognitive components, situational characteristics, and stimulus characteristics). The model reveals that the interaction between individual and environmental factors serves as crucial antecedent drivers of emotional flexibility. Specifically, families and society, as environmental factors, shape an individual’s personality and psychological capital; in turn, personality and psychological capital assist individuals in perceiving and understanding complex situations. It is through such a cyclic interactive process that an individual’s emotional flexibility is fostered. Meanwhile, an individual’s cognitive factors, situational characteristics, and emotional stimulus characteristics, as in - processing factors, jointly exert an influence on the processing of emotional flexibility. This research not only refines the research framework regarding the influencing mechanisms of emotional flexibility but also provides specific pathways for the collaborative cultivation of individuals’ emotional flexibility among families, schools, and society. Additionally, it offers practical implications for the prevention and intervention of psychological disorders and mental illnesses caused by deficits in emotional flexibility.
