Abstract: This essay describes the rationale for the burgeoning new discipline of evolutionary psychology, and addresses the major critiques of the field; specifically, the primacy of culture argument and the claim that evolutionary theories of behavior represent just-so stories. It is argued further that psychology cannot aspire to a complete understanding of its subject without including ultimate level causation, as explained by natural selection, in its theories
