Optimal Effects and Mechanisms of Daytime Light Exposure on Sleep

  • Received:2022-08-21 Revised:2022-12-02 Published:2023-01-18

Abstract: As a dominant Zeitgeber, ambient light can affect sleep-wake behavior patterns in humans. Higher light levels or light amounts during the daytime, especially during the morning, positively predict nighttime sleep quality, but this effect is mediated by the parameters of daytime light exposure (e.g., light level, time of day, duration, light pattern). On the one hand, light can directly affect sleep through the projection of melanopsin expressed by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) to sleep- and wakefulness-related brain regions; on the other hand, light can also indirectly influence the sleep-wake cycle by regulating individuals’ circadian rhythms through the SCN. However, there is still no clear consensus on whether light can affect the sleep homeostatic process in individuals. Future research should address the specificities and differences of different populations and places to build healthy and comfortable light environments to improve people’s sleep and enhance their physical and mental health.
