Abstract: By simultaneously recording brain signals from multiple individuals during interpersonal communication, hyperscanning studies have consistently observed inter-brain synchronization (IBS). However, the interpretation of IBS remains challenging. In this paper, we analyze the driving factors, cognitive mechanism and neurophysiological basis of inter-brain synchronization, and point out that inter-brain synchronization is mainly affected by interaction type and intensity, task context, partnership, individual characteristics and states, and speculate that inter-brain synchronization has functional significance in interpersonal motor coordination, verbal communication and social bonding. Further research can explore the relationship between "co-representation" and "mutual prediction" mechanisms, interpersonal "de-synchronization", cross-brain plasticity, and the comparison of different forms of interaction.
