Training and Transfer Effects of Response Inhibition Training with on-line Feedback on Adolescents’ and Adults’ Executive Function

Abstract  Executive function is a more predictable integrated cognitive function than intelligence. Training research on executive function is currently one of the hottest fields. Computerized training is one of the training schemes with rich research results and proved to have certain training and transfer effects. At present, the study of working memory training, especially updating tasks have shown a strong transfer effect on executive function, even fluid intelligence. The training research on inhibition and cognitive flexibility are relatively rare, especially the transfer effects of inhibition training are seldom positive. There maybe three properly options to understand the situation: age of the training subjects, training tasks, and transfer tasks. In order to solve the first problem, adolescents and adults were selected as the subjects to study the transfer effects of the two groups on executive function when they completed the same task. The study showed that there were differences between adolescents and adults in inhibiting training effects and transfer effects. At the same time, it partly supported the conclusion that there was no transfer effects in adults (Enge, et al, 2014). The results supported the view of compensation model. The baseline level of correctness rate of training tasks in adolescent group was lower than that in adult group. After training, the improvement of training tasks in adolescent group was significantly better than that in adult group. According to the analysis of Best and Miller (2010), the development of inhibition function in adolescence appears in the form of quantitative distortion, with adulthood as the turning point. In order to solve the second problem, the Stop Signal task was chosen as the training task. The effects of on-line feedback on training was investigated by setting up an on-line feedback in the training group. The results showed that the training effects of adults did not change after on-line feedback was added, while the adolescent group began to improve significantly from the 5th to 9th training sessions. Feedback also affected the transfer effects of adults on Go/No-go task and Stroop task, but did not affect N-back task and Raven Standard Reasoning Test. In the adolescent group, there were differences in the transfer effects on inhibition and working memory , but the reasoning was not improved. In this study, on-line feedback was added after each trial to improve the participants’ attention to accuracy rate, so that the participants can better determine the response choice of the next test. In order to solve the third problem, we selected Go/No-go task, Stroop task, N-back task and Raven Standard Reasoning Test to examine the training effects and transfer effects of on adolescents’ and adults’ executive function. We found that both adolescents and adults had transfer effects on Go/No-go tasks and working memory, but no transfer effect on reasoning. Transfer effect on Stroop tasks occurred only in adolescent groups.
