    1983, 15 (02):  30-35.
    Abstract ( 537 )
The purpose of this study is to explore the developmental levels of 8-15-year-old children's concept of intersection set and the process of their resolving inter-section problems, analysing the interaction of various components in children'scognition.151 subjects were tested with three intersection problems in differentdegrees of difficulty, presented through words, pictures and physical objects. As the results suggested:Primary school pupils had the mental factorsfor mastering simple intersection sets.In the cognition of intersection by 8-15-year-old children there exists interaction of concepts, images and sensori-motor manipulations, and the latter two play an important role in it.Theprocess of resolving intersection problems is an active one:the subjects ponderactively, make strategy, and form related concepts by the help of picturesand manual manipulations.

    CONCEPT ACQUISITION IN BILINGUAL CHILDREN
THE COOPERATIVE RESEARCH GROUP IN Studying Concept Acquisition in Bilingual Children
    1983, 15 (02):  36-42.
    Abstract ( 506 )
The aim was to determine whether logical concepts acquired in onelanguage could be transferred to another language.Following Keats &Keats, the Australian psychologists'earlier studies with bilingual children inAustralia and Malaysia,a group of four-to seven-year-old children bilingualin Chinese (the language of the Hun nationality) and the language of theUygur nationality and a group of five-year-old children bilingual in Shanghaidialect and Beijing dialect were pretested in both languages and dialectsrespectively. They were then trained in one language or dialect on the conserva-tion of weight, posttested in their other language or dialect, and again onemonth later in both languages or dialects. Results showed that the conceptacquired in one of their language or dialect was immediately available in theother, thus confirmed Keats & Keats'previous findings that language playeda minor part in the acquisition of cognitive concepts in children of this agegroup, except it seemed that these children would do slightly better on thesetasks if trained in their native language.

    Abstract ( 533 )
We attempted to understand the rule of fusion on the spatial frequencydomain in binocular stereopsis. Two sets of random-dot stereograms withdifferent texture were optically filtered by low, high and band pass filters.Filtered stereograms were paired in various combinations and examined undera stereoscope to see if any depth could be perceived. We observed that: 1. All the stereograms that passed the same filter could produce stereopsisperfectly. 2. Generally speaking, two sets with different texture have commontendency but in some cases they gave different results. 3. Sofar the overlap of spatial frequency spectra between the twohalf pictures of a stereogram could not be simply used as a rule to explain thefusing mechanism of stereo perception.

A FUZZY SET MODEL FOR CATEGORY JUDGMENT AND THE MULTISTAGE EVALUATION METHOD
Ma Mou-chao (Institute of Psychology,Academia Sinica) Cao Zhi-qiang (Institute of Automation,Academia Sinica)
    1983, 15 (02):  72-78.
    Abstract ( 669 )
The present article proposes a fuzzy set model for categorical judgment. Its main assumptions are as follows: 1. The psychological continuum can be divided into categories and thecategory boundaries are fuzzy. 2. There is a correspondence degree between the given object andeach of the categories. Its mathematical model is Next,a type of new category scale called multistage evaluation methodhas been proposed according to the model, and two kinds of concrete scalingand a method of ranking order through multiple cuts have been given. Last, the results obtained by multistage evaluation method show that itgets more information than classical categorical scale does, and the descriptionof psychological conditions and processes are more perfect and finer.

    1983, 15 (02):  79-84.
    Abstract ( 566 )
The present study, utilizing eletrodermal activity as an index of arousallevel and habituation, has the purpose to examine the inconsistancy of someprevious works on the feature of psychopysiologial reaction of cardiovasculardisease. 30 patients of coronary heart disease and 30 normal adults were used assubjects. After a 6 minute"rest"period,a series of tones and a tensionalperformance were presented successively as stimulation for habituation test ofpsychophysiological state. The results showed that patients of coronary heart disease as group wereoveraroused in comparing with normal adults. The results also showed thatpatients gave the tendency of slower habituation of electrodermal responseamplitude during tensional performance. Some problesm of psychophysiologicalfeatures and mechanism of coronary heart disease were discussed, and furtherresearch suggested.

ITEM ANALYSIS OF EYSENCK PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE TESTED IN BEIJING-DISTRICT
    Chen Zhong-geng (Beijing University)
    1983, 15 (02):  85-92.
    Abstract ( 1494 )
This is the first step of a whole process in trying to achieve a satisfactoryEPQ in China. We have a sample of 643 (male 368,female 275).The first90 items are original EPQ (ad),the 91-99 are newly added. The itemanswers are correlated bissrially with 4 scales.PsychometricaIly"bad"items(total of 14) are excluded,85-item new scales were used for future testing.Although the data were not analysed in the same manner as the original, our result showed some similar tendency with the English samples:ageregressions for Land E,N,P;inter-scale correlation PL high negative,PNlow etc.It is advocated that, with further testing and analysis, the EPQ maybe applicable to Chinese culture, and the personality structtire of the people inthat country may well be studied with Eysenck's dimensions.

LOCATION AND AFFERENT CONNECTIONS OF THE“GROANING CENTER”IN THE MIDBRAIN OF CATS
Lu Chang-lin (The Second Army Medical University)
    1983, 15 (02):  93-100.
    Abstract ( 662 )
The present study is an attempt to further ascertain the histological locationand afferent connections of the"Groaning Center"of the cat. In 1952,by electrical stimulation of the lateral tegmental area of cats, arestricted region was found to give rise to the groaning response and itwas designated as the"Groaning Center",which on excitation would alsoproduce various viseral and motor reactions. According to our microscopic study of the position of the"GroaningCenter",we found that the pars lateralis of the nucleus subcuneiformis inthe lateral tegmental region is the focal point of the center. It lies ventrala-teral to the nucleus trochlear, medial to the lateral lemniscus and the nucleusparalemniscalis (Jasper atlas,1954),dorsal to the nucleus cuneiformis.Thiscenter extends about 1.0mm.anteroposteriorly,1.0mm.mediolaterally andabout 1.5mm.dorsoventrally.This area cheifly consists of fibers and scatteredcells of medium and small size.A cluster of larger cells has been observed inthe ventral region of the center. By HRP retrograde transport study,we found that after injection ofHRP into the center, the reactive cells were found in extensive brain areas. The labelled cells were mainly found in the ipsilateral side of the hypothala-mus,especially in the lateral and posterior nucleus of hypothalamus as wellas the dorsomedial nucleus of hypothalamus. The reactive cells were also foundin the forebrain regions, such as the cingulate gyrus, globus pallidus, zonaincerta, nucleus parafascicularis, etc. The relation between the center with vocalization and emotionalresponses is discussed.
